CME versus CPD

Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The purpose of Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is to keep physicians current in their medical practice as part of a life learning commitment to their patients and society.
The CPD/CME embrace the necessary elements of ‘Good Medical Practice’, such as knowledge, skills and performance, safety and quality, communication, partnership and teamwork, and maintaining trust.
CPD/CME acknowledges that being a good physician includes competencies that extend beyond medical knowledge, including managerial, ethical, social, and personal skills.

The key to receiving credits is the accreditation of activities, which can be done on the national level following the regulations of a given country or the international level by EBU or the UEMS/EACCME.

Within the EU-ACME programme activities are accredited following the CME/CPD credit system set up by the European Board of Urology (EBU).

Continuing Medical Education (CME)

CME activities (category 1 and 2) are almost always geared towards practicing physicians and are designed to provide information that is both relevant and essential to medical practice. To achieve these aims, successful CME programmes are based on effective educational principles that promote the acquisition of knowledge while promoting efficiency, professional integrity and high ethical standards.

Example of CME activities: workshop, congress, course, e-learning, seminar, etc. Register your activities here

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

CPD (categories 3, 4 and 5) can be defined as the systematic maintenance, improvements and broadening of knowledge and skills, and the development of professional qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties through the practitioner’s working life.

Examples of CPD activities: presentation, article, lecture, teaching activities, committee member, etc. Register your activities here

CME & CPD are fundamental tools in ongoing development

CME and CPD help doctors maintain and upgrade their knowledge in chosen medical field and broaden their personal and professional experience after obtaining the post-graduate degree and becoming specialist.

Above all, CME/CPD enhances the quality of patient’s care by constantly improving the physician’s skills, broadening the physician’s professional outlook and helping him/her to keep up with the vast amount of scientific information constantly being generated.
